but why is it so hard to just let us know approximately how long beta is being delayed or moved up?
Because any delay in the current climate is viewed as a failure. If we aren't taking signups for beta right now, some people say it must mean our game isn't going to be done this century or won't be fun or can't be as good as some other game that isn't out yet either. Sorry, but it doesn't help anything to say when beta signups might begin, only to say when they will begin. And I'm not going to say anything about that just yet.
Some of you want a "state of the game" address to reassure you that things are still on track. The reality is that I've been giving such statements in pieces that simply haven't surfaced yet. I talk about the state of combat in a blog that hasn't turned up (and if it doesn't soon, I'll simply post the information in another format). I discuss the fun factor of the game in an IGN Q&A that should show up on Friday. Screenshots show more and more improvement and give evidence that our world is alive with NPCs. The little glipse of the UI you saw on the China pic shows we have made huge strides in that area (okay, the pic doesn't really convey that so well, but I'm telling you that we have ).
As Anyuzer once pointed out, you guys know an awful lot about the mechanics of the game. Giving you much more would spoil a lot of the fun of discovering things for yourself. However, I do understand that you want new information on a consistent basis, and that is something we're working on delivering. But setting up that process takes time and effort, and believe me I've been spending a lot of both lately. I think the results will be worth the current relative lull.
I wish I could do something more concrete to reassure you that your faith in our team and in this game is not misplaced. But any words I can write would pale in comparison to seeing the game in person for five minutes. I'm being completely honest when I say that the game has come incredibly far in the time that I've been on the team, and as an EverQuest fan I have not a single doubt that we will prove worthy of the name.
There's more I wish I could say, and even more I wish I could show you. All I can say is that soon the time will come when you will judge for yourself. EverQuest II will ship in 2004. It will be a very fun game. And when you can walk around and see the new Norrath, all the waiting will be nothing but a distant memory.
Oh, and in answer to your question:
