Honestly, the trick is to take in less than you burn in calories a day. Get active and start burning calories. It can be anything that gets your heart rate going for at least 20 minutes.
In the past 5 months, I have lost about 36 pounds. I did it mainly by cutting back on calories When I started I dropped to around 1200-1600 calories a day. (You don't want to sit at one caloric intake level or your body adjusts too much.) My average intake was probably close to 1400 a day. I am sitting at around 1600 calorie average now. I just can't eat anymore nowadays since making this lifestyle change.
Due to other concerns, I also dropped off my carbs immensely. A single serving of carbs is considered 15 grams. Most healthy people can probably get away with about 10 servings a day total as long as they are spaced out throughout the day. I dropped to about 6 servings a day total and tried to never have more than 2 servings in one sitting.
I am now at a point where I am maintaining my weight and feeling good about it. My blood sugar is way down, cholesterol is down, and I feel more positive about myself. The only downside was the new wardrobe I had to get.
