If it were just lost connections, or if crashes were a rare thing, I would find it easy to accept the losses - they are a fact of online game life, as you say. But I crash (not just lose connection) an average of twice per real-time hour (which is around twice per 50 ingame minutes)*. It becomes extremely frustrating when I lose so many crafting attempts to crashes.
I do understand the high exploitability of most simple solutions, and more complex solutions (such as restoring you to the same point in the crafting process as when you crashed) are likely too time-intensive to implement. But the frequent crashing, combined with its implications (adventuring death, crafting item loss & death, diplomacy death [parley loss typically carries a small enough penalty to not really bug me]), is my number one frustration while playing, in any sphere. Addressing it from either side (substantially improving client stability, or lessening the penalties of crashing) would be a very welcome enhancement.

* These numbers are supported by my crash record from this past weekend, as well as being a longer-term trend since I started tracking in Live-1803.
From where I stand I would rather see client stability be improved, as that is good on many levels. That said stability of client is constantly being worked on, but we can only do so much in so much time.
