Academic was the intended Presence type. With the new Writ system we did away with only nobles as placeholders. The majority of the NPCs now fit in the Soldier, Academic, and Noble stations, but there may be a few who don't fit the mold.

As far as the presence value missing, it actually was there. It was a graphical error that caused it not to show up. You will need 150 academic presence to parley with the First Scholars. It should display properly in the next patch.
